Event Overview

What started in 2003 as a toy drive to cel­e­brate the relo­ca­tion of the world’s largest Santa Claus from Carpinteria to Oxnard has grown into a robust run­ning event, toy drive, com­mu­nity fundraiser, and holiday season celebration. The Half Marathon and Two-Per­son Relay starts at the leg­endary Santa Claus statue, located along the 101 free­way in Nye­land Acres, near Oxnard. The run­ners fol­low a flat and fast, USATF cer­ti­fied course, along the fra­grant straw­berry fields, through Downtown Oxnard and the Henry T. Oxnard Historic District dec­o­rated for the hol­i­days, to the beach, and fin­ish at Chan­nel Islands Har­bor. Now in its 7th year, Santa to the Sea features:

  • Charity Challenge
  • Neighborhood Challenge
  • Finish Line Festival & Holiday Marketplace

Com­mu­nity Impact

The Santa to the Sea Scholarship Program part­ners with the Oxnard Col­lege Foun­da­tion to award $500 schol­ar­ships to local high school stu­dents and adults con­tin­u­ing their edu­ca­tion at Oxnard Col­lege. Funded by allo­cat­ing $5 of every race entry to the pro­gram, plus a generous donation from the Gene Haas Foundation, Santa to the Sea awarded more than 75 schol­ar­ships in 2013 – a total of $37,500 – helping students realize their dreams of a college education. The Santa to the Sea Toy Drive col­lects more than 2,500 items for needy chil­dren in the area, with dis­tri­b­u­tion at Santa Claus Park on the Sat­ur­day before Christ­mas. Addi­tional fundrais­ing flows from the event’s Char­ity Chal­lenge, where run­ners raise money for local char­i­ties of their choice.

Participants & Audience

The Santa to the Sea Finish Line Festival & Holiday Marketplace at Marine Emporium Landing in Channel Islands Harbor is where it all comes together for thou­sands of race par­tic­i­pants, spec­ta­tors, supporters and community members. Crowds con­gre­gate early to visit ven­dors and get in posi­tion to cheer the run­ners, begin­ning with the 5K and 1K fin­ish­ers, fol­lowed by the half marathon­ers from around 9:30 am to noon. Spon­sors can connect to nearly 9,000 peo­ple on race day, includ­ing an anticipated 4,000 run­ners for 2014 and another 5,000 spec­ta­tors at the Finish Line Festival. Runners are well known in mar­keting cir­cles for their out­stand­ing demo­graphic profiles!  

Mar­ket­ing Outreach & Impact

Con­sumers in and around Ven­tura and Los Angeles coun­ties learn about Santa to the Sea through a com­pre­hen­sive mar­ket­ing cam­paign across print, online, and social media plat­forms. Monthly e-newsletters reach more than 10,000 race and event enthu­si­asts and more than 3,000 fol­low­ers keep informed on the Santa to the Sea Face­book page.
